Some users can abuse disk space, so the other users can suffer from disk space insufficiency, then it is necessary to buy another disk. One of the ways to avoid this is to define a maximum disk space for each user or to monitor usage of the space by particular users. Under Windows NT 4.0 it used to be necessary to buy software from other producers (e.g.
Quota manager). Now there is another possibility under Windows 2000 - disk quotas.
Before the setup
Disk quotas do not always limit the disk space, but they are often used rather for information purposes that tell about using space by particular users.
For the users who install programs the quotas are not suitable. Quotas are designated especially to check the space defined for documents and other data. It means that only administrators having unlimited access should be allowed to install new programs and components.
Each department of a firm requires different settings. Low quotas
limit are sufficient for administrative workers and common documents, for graphic project high quotas
limit are recommended.
Conditions for using disk quotas
The volume must be formatted by NTFS file system.
The space is
calculated by virtue of ownership of directories and files
The quota is valid for the
volume; in case you want to define quotas for particular directories you have to use products of other
producers (e. g. Quota manager as mentioned above)
Compression of files is ignored, valid statement is the actual uncompressed size.
Settings and display of quotas is available only for administrators.
2 types of setup
Information - Quotas are set up only for information purposes. After exceeding the quotas you can set up recording of events into the system protocol in Event viewer.
Limitation - Limit on the disk is established and the user have no right to exceed it.
Enabling disk quotas
After having opened
This computer in Explorer or in disk view open Disk properties which you want to create a quota for.
Enable
quota management - Activates disk quotas
Deny
disk space to users exceeding quota limit - When exceeding limited space a dialog telling about insufficiency of disk space is displayed to user. To get right to record the user have to delete some files or ask for increasing disk quota
Do
not limit disk usage - Space on disk will not be limited, the user will be monitored only to get information how much of the disk space size he has used.

Set
warning level to - Limit to admonish of danger of disk space depletion.

Informs about usage of disk space by particular users.
In
Quota Entries menu you can add or remove quotas for particular users. By help of Export or Import option you can save the settings and transfer them onto another server or pack (volume).
To remove a quota you have to delete the data owned by a particular user or to make the ownership over another user.
